The championship

The national title of a growing American sport

The U.S. Nordic Walking Championships award the official national titles of the Nordic Walking Association of North America. The championship sits at the top of the NWANA competition ladder: open, local and club racing, state and regional competition, and the season-long NWANA Series all lead to this start line.

NWANA is developing its first championship cycle for 2027–2028. The federation confirms the host city and dates as host agreements are signed, and publishes them on this site the moment they are set. Cities, venues and sport organizations interested in hosting the first United States titles will find the host program below.

Championship racing is official NWANA competition: athletes race with the Athlete License, under federation rules, with trained judges and organizers prepared through NWANA Academy.

The Championship Priority List is open now on RunSignup. Athletes join the list today, and list members receive their registration invitations first, in joining order, when registration opens with the official host announcement. Joining the list is free.

Disciplines and championship racing

Championship racing grows from the Series distances, and NWANA develops championship formats toward in-person racing on stadium, road and cross-country courses. The NWANA competition system holds four disciplines:

Stadium

Track racing on measured stadium courses, the purest test of technique and speed.

Road

Measured road courses through host cities, built for spectators and civic celebration.

Cross-Country

Trail and park courses that race Nordic Walking in its natural terrain.

Relay

Team relay racing enters the championship program as the host format matures.

NWANA performance levels

The federation classifies every official performance into five levels. The table shows the classification standards by distance, the same standards that govern the NWANA Series.

Championship rules

Racing under the NWANA SPORT rules

Championship racing runs under the NWANA SPORT competition rules, the federation rule framework governing every official NWANA competition. The framework covers the full life of a championship race:

Participation in NWANA competitions is open to every athlete. The official standings of the Series and the Championships, with season points, ratings, titles and awards, are maintained for athletes holding an active NWANA Athlete License, and championship titles are awarded within the official standings under the championship regulations.

Eligibility and the Athlete License

Championship racing welcomes every athlete. The official championship standings, with titles and awards, belong to athletes holding an active NWANA Athlete License. Entry follows the qualification and selection rules published for each championship edition.

Divisions and levels

Titles are awarded across the federation age divisions and the five NWANA performance levels. Each result earns one standings position and one title, and the classification places every athlete in a single standings.

Equipment

Championship racing uses Nordic Walking poles and footwear under the federation equipment rules, with equipment checks at the start.

Technique and judging

Trained NWANA judges officiate championship racing and observe technique on the course: pole plants, stride and posture define legal racing form under the technique rules.

Penalties and protests

The rules provide time penalties and disqualification for rule breaches, and a protest procedure with published deadlines after each race.

Results and safety

Official results are published with performance level classification and feed the NWANA rankings. Championship courses follow federation safety requirements, with medical cover and course marshals confirmed with the host for race day.

The championship regulations for each edition are published with the host announcement and form part of the athlete invitation.

Athletes

The road to the United States title

Every United States title starts with a season of racing. Athletes across the country build their results and rankings in the NWANA Series, hold the Athlete License, and earn their place on the championship start line.

Race the Series

The NWANA Series runs all season on the six championship distances. Series results and rankings form the foundation of championship qualification.

Hold the Athlete License

Championship racing is official NWANA competition. Athletes race with the NWANA Athlete License, the federation license for official competition.

Earn selection

NWANA publishes championship qualification rules as each host agreement is confirmed, and selected athletes receive their championship invitation.

The Championship Priority List is open

Championship dates and the host city are in confirmation, and the athlete field is already forming. Athletes on the Priority List receive their registration invitations first, in the order they joined, when registration opens. Joining is free, and every name on the list shows host cities and partners the real athlete demand behind this championship.
